DeRidder PD creates addiction hotline

DeRidder police have created a hotline — named First Step — to help addicts embark on the road to recovery.

“I can remember from my years as a narcotics officer being on the phone at 2 a.m. with someone struggling with their addiction,” said Police Chief John Gott.

“This is a number for addicts or their family members who need help getting their lives back in control to call and get the support that they need. It is something that has been very important to me for a long time.”

All calls placed to the hotline — 337-202-7801 — will be answered by DeRidder police officers who volunteer for the program. Callers can remain anonymous, and anything they say will be confidential, Gott said.

“If the discussion follows the guidelines of what we have lined out for this, to help someone make that first move to recovery, then we are not pursuing anything criminal from this,” Gott said.

“If they need us to, we can even go to their home and remove the drugs from the premises and they don’t need to worry about charges. This is intended as just another way to service the community, which is what we are here to do.”
