Duzan, Tyree help La. win River Cup

Sulphur High’s Brooke Duzan and Brooke Tyree, along with Alden Wallace of Shreveport’s Loyola Prep, helped lead the Louisiana team to a 32.5-7.5 victory over Mississippi in the recent Junior River Cup matches at the Diamondhead (Miss.) Country Club.

Duzan and Wallace, who has committed to play golf at LSU, were both 3-0 while Tyree was 2-1 in competition that included four ball play, foursome play and individual play.

There were 20 players on the Louisiana team, 12 boys and eight girls.

Duzan, a senior who has committed to play college golf at Lamar, and Tyree, have been the top girl golfers in the area for the past few years. Both have earned all-state honors and have led Sulphur High to the state girls title the past two years.

“Both can play and they work at it,” swing coach Bear Suarez said of the two golfers. “Duzan is more of a down-the-middle player and is real scrappy while Tyree is a bomber off the tee box. Both are great competitors and they push each other. It’s very rare (in our state) to get two of that caliber on the same team.”

Duzan and Tyree will be in action on Oct. 31 when the Southwest Louisiana Junior Golf Association’s girls travel team begins its fall season in an outing at the Conroe (Texas) Country Club.

Joining the two on the team will be Daphney Tilton and Carly Whittington of Lacassine High and Abbie Richard of Sulphur High.

“This is the first time to have five girls on the team since we began four years ago,” Suarez said. “The tournament will draw the best teams from the Houston area.”

Suarez also said the boys travel team will begin its fall season Nov. 7 in a tournament at April Sound (Conroe).

Ben Suarez began play in the Adams Tour winter series this past week in Walden on Lake Conroe. It was a two-day event. He shot rounds of 74-75 for a 149 and did not finish in the money.

There are 12 two-day tournaments in the winter series, all on courses in the Houston area. The prize money in each is $20,000 with $4,000 going to the winner.

Suarez will be headed to the second stage of the Web.com qualifier Nov. 1 and will play at the Robert Trent Jones course in Mobile, Alabama. Qualifiers will advance to the finals to be played in Florida in December.

Zach Amy collected a hole-in-one and Andrew Bosier knocked in an eagle during the past week at The National in Westlake.

Amy, who has only been playing the game for three months, aced the 118-yard 12th hole with a 9-iron while Bosier, playing for less than a year, hit on the green in two and made a putt for his eagle on No. 17.

Teams are being compiled for the upcoming Lake Area Cup matches, which will run Nov. 12-13. Mallard Cove, The National and Gray Planation will field teams.

Players wishing to participate should contact their pro shops.

The National is the defending champion.
