When Ivanka Trump was a little girl, hopefully before she was on her father's hot list, she had a lemonade stand. But this childhood lemonade stand was probably not much like your childhood lemonade stand.
"I had a whole lot of lemonade stands growing up, which were helpful in learning about business on the most fundamental level," she says. ...
Ivanka writes that she and her brothers used their "wily charms and persuasive marketing skills" to get their bodyguard, their parents' driver, and some of the household staff to buy enough lemonade to cover their expenses. They "took pity on us and dug deep for their spare change," she writes.
How sweet. They got the hired help to “dig deep” and cover the costs of the poor Trump waifs.
And it really did teach Ivanka Trump a lesson—a lesson she’s using in Trump's new D.C. hotel.
At lunchtime on a recent weekday, 17 people were eating in a space that seats 120. …
Drinking my iced tea, I gazed over the railing at the lobby, then looked again: There was Ivanka, leading an entourage of eager people with clipboards and notebooks.
Ms. Trump swept up the steps into the restaurant. Half the diners stood up. They weren’t customers, somebody in the entourage said, but employees.
Dig deep, employees. It’s going to take a lot more spare change to keep that hotel in business. A lot more. But you can do it. At the most fundamental level, Ivanka learned you can always lean on the staff.
Oh, and thank you for standing when Ivanka came into the room. Remember, bowing is completely optional.
