Jeff Davis CADA awarded $20,000 shelter grant

JENNINGS — Jeff Davis Communities Against Domestic Abuse has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Mary Kay Foundation to help combat domestic violence and provide rehabilitation services.

The grant is part of $3 million in funding that the foundation has awarded this year to 150 domestic violence shelters nationwide.

“The grant will allow us to make some much needed repairs to our facility and continue to offer the residential and nonresidential services to our clients,” said CADA Executive Director Janice Esthay.

In the past year, CADA has provided in-house shelter for 51 adults and 21 children, and advocates have helped 294 nonresidents obtain utilities, groceries and restraining orders. In addition, the crisis hotline has received 307 calls.

“The fact that shelters across the country can use these unrestricted funds to best fit their immediate needs has often made the difference between keeping the doors open or closed, maintaining a critical service or providing a life-saving safe place for a family in need,” said Anne Crews, a Mary Kay Foundation board member.

Nearly 600 domestic violence shelters applied for the foundation shelter grants this year.
