The Gators finished the job this time.
A week after allowing three touchdowns in the final 5 minutes of a loss to Leesville, LaGrange controlled the game from start to finish against DeRidder, scoring a touchdown in each quarter en route to a 27-0 win Friday night.
LaGrange (4-4, 3-1) remained tied atop the district standings with Leesville and Rayne, both of which also won Friday night. Each of the three can earn a share of the district title win a win next week. Leesville is at DeRidder, LaGrange is at Washington-Marion and Rayne is at Crowley.
LaGrange’s defense held DeRidder (2-7, 1-3) to 179 yards of offense, forced three turnovers and produced a score of its own when Jordan Griffin recovered a fumble in the end zone in the third quarter.
The Gators put together a 12-play, 76-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped by an 8-yard touchdown run by Kameron Davis. Colton Frank staked the Gators to a 14-0 halftime lead with a pair of touchdown passes, a 43-yarder to Vincent Wilson in the first quarter and a 70-yarder to Anthony Johnson in the second quarter.
Gators head coach Jules Sullen said his team focused on the fundamentals.
“Our coaches did a great job of making sure we stuck to the basics, we went back to some things we did well,” he said. “DeRidder fought hard and made some great plays, but we started to find an identity. Our guys made plays when we needed them.”
Frank finished with 149 yards on 8-of-13 passing.
Torrin Bouvia ran for 33 yards to lead DeRidder. Zac Pursley had six receptions for 37 yards and added 19 yards rushing.
Sullen said the Gators wanted the win to continue their string of five consecutive playoff appearances.
“We were No. 23 in the power rankings we knew that a win would ensure us a playoff spot,” he said. “We told them not to be the team that ended the streak. Our focus was to play as hard as we can and ry capitalize on third-down conversions, which we did not do last week. We kind of faulted here and there, but we made some long drives and were able to put it away with a couple of touchdowns.”
Sullen said Johnson and Davis returning to form is a good omen for his offense.
“We have three outstanding backs and they have all been kind of injured. Ethan Thomas is still dealing with an injury,” he said. “When the three of them are healthy, I think we are a dominant run team. Hopefully next week they can get out of those injuries and make some plays for us in the end.”
