Pregame: Three questions and a prediction for McNeese-Abilene Christian

It is homecoming in the Hole tonight at 6 p.m. when McNeese welcomes Abilene Christian. Here are three burning pregame questions and a prediction.

  1. Can the McNeese running game build on last week?

  • Justin Pratt was the hot hand and the Cowboys had their best rushing game of the season — averaging six yards per carry. Abilene’s “active” defensive front is its strong suit, Lance Guidry says, but the Wildcats allow 227.5 rushing yards per game.

      2. Will the Cowboys cornerbacks limit chunk plays?

  • Abilene quarterback Dallas Sealey is a gunslinger who threw for five touchdowns last week. Guidry expects double moves and deep shots all game, so look for Jermaine Antoine, Khalil Thomas and Colby Burton to be tested often.

     3. Is Sam Houston State lurking?

  • Abilene is 1-7. McNeese gets the No. 1 team in the country next week in a game ripe with storylines. The Cowboys did an admirable job last week of not overlooking a bad Northwestern team. They will need to do the same this week.

PREDICTION: It’s not all coach speak, this Abilene Christian team may be the best 1-7 team the Cowboys have seen. Two losses came by three points. The Wildcats hung tough with the No. 1 team in the FCS. But this is homecoming and James Tabary’s been just too good to pick an upset.
