Three Point Stance: Big plays abound in Week 8

Staff writers Warren Arceneaux and Tyler Nunez review Week 8 of the high school football season in this edition of the Three Point Stance.

Who was your small school (Classes 2A-1A) player of the week?

TN: I’m going with Lake Arthur kicker Chance Broussard, who lifted the Tigers to a 36-35 victory against Vinton with a winning, 31-yard field goal.

WA: With all due respect to my player to watch from Thursday, Elton quarterback Keshawn Lyons, who had a monster game vs. South Cameron, it has to be quarterback James Kirklin, who led Oberlin to a huge road win over East Beauregard with a 193-yard, two-touchdown game.

RA: Kirklin. He had another huge game to lead the Tigers to the top of District 4-1A after a 30-22 win over East Beauregard. Kirklin rushed for more than 100 yards for the third consecutive week, and most of his yards were after initial contact. He gained 193 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns while averaging a healthy 9.2 yards per carry.

Who was your big school (Classes 5A-3A) player of the week?

TN: Barbe wide receiver Nate Briscoe had a career night in the Bucs’ 50-33 win against Comeaux on Friday night. The primary target of quarterback Gavin Nettles reeled in 13 catches for 246 yards and a trio of touchdowns. The performance couldn’t have come at a better time, as the victory put the Bucs in position to at least split the District 3-5A championship with a win against Sulphur in their season finale this Friday.

WA: Since you took a Barbe player, I can’t take my player to watch from Thursday, Bucs running back Kirkland Banks, who had a monster game with 203 yards and three touchdowns. So I will go with Leesviile running back Cory McCoy, who scored twice in the last 5 minutes of a Wampus Cats comeback win versus LaGrange.

RA: The Sulphur Tors are more known for their high-powered offense, but junior free safety Connor Cooke put on a clinic Friday in a 69-24 win over Lafayette. Cooke blocked a punt in the first quarter that led to a touchdown and caused a fumble in the third quarter that was scooped up by Michael Dufresne for a 41-yard touchdown. He capped off the night with a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Which team had the biggest win?

TN: Washington-Marion made what is the most unlikely jump from the bottom of District 3-4A to a tie for first place in the span of eight days I have ever seen. With consecutive wins against DeRidder and Crowley, in addition to a forfeit win from their game against Sulphur in Week 2, the Charging Indians have jumped from 0-6 to 3-5 in the span of a week and are now in a position to make a late run into the Class 4A playoffs.

WA: Leesville, which had a dramatic win in a game one of us (me) called the most interesting game of the week in Thursday’s edition. The Wampus Cats got back to .500, moved into a tie for first place in District 3-4A and improved their chances of earning a first-round home playoff game.

RA: How big was Oberlin’s win over District 4-1A rival East Beauregard. Not only did the Tigers take the lead in the district but Oberlin head coach Durrell Peloquin said after the game that the Tigers had not won in Dry Creek in many years. Oberlin (6-2, 5-0) needs to beat South Cameron (3-5, 2-3) on the road next week and Grand Lake (4-4, 1-4) at home Week 10 to secure its first district championship 2012.
