What is the best big schools game on the Week 9 schedule?
WA: Sulphur vs. Barbe, one of the area’s biggest rivalries, two explosive offenses and big district title implications as well.
TN: South Beauregard and Iowa will take each other on in a clash of styles that will surely make for an interesting bout. After playing six of their first eight games on the road, the Yellow Jackets close out their season with a two-game home stand, starting with a big game against the Golden Knights with district title implications. South Beauregard needs a win to remain in District 4-3A title contention, while an Iowa win will likely lead to a district title game in the final week of the season.
RA: It doesn’t get any bigger than Barbe at Sulphur this week. The Tors are currently in the driver seat for the District 3-5A title at 4-0. With a bye next week, Barbe is playing its last regular season game and a win over the arch rival Tors would give them at least a share of the district title. Acadiana, who is off this week, also has a shot at a piece of the pie that could be split three ways. Sulphur is shooting for at least a share of its first district title since 2007 and they will need to end an eight-game losing streak to the Bucs to do it.
Which team most needs to win in Week 9?
WA: LaGrange. The Gators let a road win slip away in Leesville last week and lost control of the District 3-4A race in the process. The Gators can still earn a share of the title by winning out, and they definitely need to close the season with wins against DeRidder and Washington-Marion to have a chance at a home playoff game.
TN: Barbe can guarantee a share of the District 3-5A title this Friday when they take on archrival Sulphur in their regular season finale for one of the most important games in the rivalry’s recent history. The Bucs’ offense has looked unstoppable since the return of quarterback Gavin Nettles, scoring 94 points in his two outing back. Nettles has found a red hot option in receiver Nate Briscoe who has caught 20 passes for 343 yards and 4 touchdowns in Barbe’s last two games. But the Bucs will have to get through a Sulphur team undeafeated in district (albeit thanks to a forfeit by Acadiana) led by a nasty duo of running backs in J’Cobi Skinner and Glenn Willis who have combined for 2,123 yards this season.
RA: Just pick one of the four teams currently tied for the lead in District 3-4A. LaGrange, Washington-Marion, Leesville and Rayne are all 2-1 in district. Washington-Marion, who just three weeks ago was winless, has the biggest test when they travel to 7-1 Rayne and a shot at extending their win streak to three games.
What is the best big-schools rivalry in Southwest Louisiana?
WA: Leesville-DeRidder, the only rivalry game with an actual trophy, the Hooper Memorial Trophy. Same-size schools, close geographically, they played a postseason game against each other a couple of years ago, it is usually a competitive game. It is a long rivalry with a lot of tradition, it has everything.
TN: Jennings and Iowa. These two teams just bring so much to the table, and they both have plenty of stars to keep people entertained. Jennings has star running back Travis Etienne, who has tallied 1,571 yards and 25 touchdown on 148 rushes this season, while Iowa has a dynamic passing game with receivers like Andre Sam and Cole Fleming, who’s always a threat for the bomb. This year’s edition likely won’t be an exception as the two will likely be playing for the District 4-3A title.
RA:The Sulphur-Barbe rivalry is the most heated in Southwest Louisiana. The two biggest schools in SWLA have played every year since 1972 except 2005. That game was cancelled because of Hurricane Rita. Barbe leads the series 27-17 but when the two meet on the field you might as well as throw all the records out.
