Three Point Stance: Stage set for regular-season finale

Staff writers Warren Arceneaux, Rodrict Anderson and Tyler Nunez review the highlights of Week 9 of the high school football season in the edition of the Three Point Stance.

Which area team picked up the biggest win?

WA: Iota, which broke a long district losing streak and picked up its second win with a home victory over St. Louis had the biggest win. A nice reward for a program that has made strides despite suffering key injuries over the past two years.

RA: It was the Barbe Bucs, who have a bye this week, the regular-season final. The Bucs made sure to get the job done by beating archrival Sulphur and claiming at least a piece of the District 3-5A championship. The Bucs defense held the Tors to their second lowest point total of the season. Now the Bucs sit back and wait to see if they have done enough for a top-10 playoff seed.

TN: Iowa gave itself a chance to win sole possession of the District 4-3A title after the Yellow jackets defeated South Beauregard in shutout fashion. This week the Yellow Jackets host undefeated Jennings for the district championship. The Yellow Jackets have shutout their last two district opponents, and they may be able to slow down Etienne and the Bulldogs.

Who was the outstanding small schools player?

WA: Elton’s Keshawn Lyons, who scored running, receiving and passing and accounted for more than 300 yards of offense for the second week in a row while leading Elton to a win over Grand Lake.

RA: Kinder running back Taylor Johnson. Before Friday night’s 63-13 win over Lake Arthur, he had 19 touchdowns but he added six more Friday night. He also gained 181 yards to break the 1,000-yard mark for the third consecutive season.

TN: Welsh running back Reggie Jackson Jr. had a terrific night carrying the football, rushing for 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 10 carries. His performance helped lift the Greyhounds to a 69-13 win against Vinton to remain undefeated going into their regular-season finale against Kinder.

Who was the outstanding large schools player?

WA: Leesville’s Cory McCoy, who scored on a 25-yard run and 99-yard interception return to lead the Wampus Cats to a crucial 21-19 win over Crowley. The Wampus Cats can earn a share of the District 3-4A title with a win over rival DeRidder this week.

RA: Barbe quarterback Gavin Nettles that set the tone of the game. Nettles, who missed two games with an injury earlier this season, completed his first five passes and ended up completing 67 percent of his passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns. He he also ran for 37 yards on 10 carries.

TN: Iowa defensive back Jaren Dugas was in the right place at the right time all night in Iowa’s shutout of South Beauregard. In addition to a pair of interceptions, he broke up a significant number of passes that likely would have been caught for big gains. He’s a big reason Iowa remained undefeated in District 4-3A.
