Understanding Miles says he's not bitter

BATON ROUGE — Fired LSU coach Les Miles appeared on ESPN’s “GameDay” Saturday morning in an extensive interview with Tom Rinaldi.

The former LSU coach expressed no bitterness over his dismissal last Sunday and he said he understood why the move came.

“I’m not a guy that bemoans history and history played out,” he said. “They wanted more production. I understand that.”

He said he understood — and welcomed— the high expectations at a school like LSU.

“If we put a team on the field, it should win. The one thing I always enjoyed about LSU is you step in front of that 102,000 (fans), they thought you were going to beat the tar out of somebody and you thought you were going to beat the tar out of somebody. I’ve dealt with high expectations enjoyed them and tried to coach and surpass them.”

Miles was asked about the fact that he basically got fired over a half-second when the Tigers came that close to getting off an apparent game-winning play at the end of an 18-13 loss to Auburn last week.

Asked what he’d be doing if the play had been allowed, Miles said, “I’d be getting sweaty over there with the Tigers.”

Instead, for the first time in 12 years, an LSU team took the field without him.

It wasn’t going to be easy on him, Miles said.

“Will be a difficult thing for me,” he said. “I may just get in the back yard, walk around, make some calls and sweat. Around 7 o’clock, I think those Tigers come on. I’ll be right there.”

Miles repeated that he thought he still had some coaching left in him.

“I’m ready to call plays,” he said. “I still love the game. It’s the job I enjoy most, certainly, until I have other experiences, would be coaching.

“I did the things that I felt like would give us the best opportunity to victory, that reflected a grind towards making sure they’re academically solvent, that they’re going to class, doing the right things. That’s how I am going to judge me.”
