USDA designates Pointe Coupee Parish as a disaster area

BATON ROUGE -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated Pointe Coupee Parish as a primary natural disaster area due to damages and losses caused by severe storms and flooding that occurred in August.

Farmers and ranchers in Avoyelles, Concordia, Iberville, St. Landry, St. Martin, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana parishes also qualify for national disaster assistance because their areas are contiguous.

All of those parishes were designated natural disaster areas on Oct. 21, making each qualified farm operator in the designated areas eligible for low interest emergency loans from USDA's Farm Service Agency, provided eligibility requirements are met

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in a news release announcing the designation Tuesday, said the department stands with Louisiana producers when severe weather threatens to disrupt their livelihood.
