Washington-Marion has had a crazy couple of weeks.
In the span of a week, the Chargin’ Indians went from losing its first six games of the season to a 3-5 overall record and a shared spot atop the District 3-4A standings thanks to back-to-back wins against DeRidder and Crowley and a forfeit win against Sulphur from their week two contest.
As a result, Washington-Marion controls its own destiny, and its next test comes tonight when they travel to Rayne (7-1, 2-1) in a game that will see the winner keep its first-place spot in the standings with just one game remaining in the regular season.
“The kids understand what’s at stake, and they’re working really hard,” said Washington-Marion head coach Freddie Harrison. “The kids never stopped working. That’s one thing I have to commend them for. Even when they were 0-6, they were still working hard to try to get a victory. And that still hasn’t changed today as we have an opportunity to control our own destiny.
“That’s a testament to what the core values of our program are: never give up, never stop fighting, always give your best effort whether you’re down or whether you’re up.”
Harrison said he has seen his young — he called it “sophomore-heavy” — team grow immensely throughout the course of the season.
The biggest improvement he’s noticed the Chargin’ Indians make has been the recent lack of turnovers they have committed.
He cited Washington-Marion’s season opener in which it turned the ball over five times in an 18-6 loss to Marksville, and compared it to the Chargin’ Indians last two games in which it avoided those mistakes.
“We won the turnover battle these last two weeks,” Harrison said. “We’ve also been able to run the football and stop the run. It’s that simple.”
Sophomore wide receiver-turned-running back Gerron Duhon has become a vital part of the Chargin’ Indians’ offense with his speed and his ability to average around eight yards per carry and tally four rushing touchdowns this season.
His success has helped open things up for senior running back Jacobi Taylor, who has collected 771 yards and four touchdowns 166 carries this season.
“(Duhon) has been consistent,” Harrison said. “That’s what you ask for in a kid. You just want him to be consistent. When he was a receiver he produced when we got touches for him, and when he moved to running back he produced. He also plays in the secondary. That’s all you can ask of a kid.”
Washington-Marion will face a Rayne squad who bounced back from its sole loss of the season to LaGrange with back-to-back wins against Leesville and DeRidder.
Harrison said the keys to defeating the talented Wolves team are pretty simple.
“The keys to victory are stopping the run, being able to run the football, don’t turn the football over and create turnovers,” Harrison said.
