Welsh rebounds against Vinton

WELSH — For a brief moment, it seemed as if Welsh may have been looking past the Vinton Lions and looking forward to next week’s matchup against the Kinder Yellow Jackets.

However, Welsh put all doubts to rest and responded to an early Vinton score to go on to win 69-13 Friday night.

Minutes into the game, Vinton’s Tony St. Julien went 45 yards into the end zone after receiving a pass from quarterback Lucas Cormier.

Welsh did not wait long to respond. Cade Iguess received the kickoff and went 76 yards into the end zone. Vinton fumbled the ensuing possession on their 23-yard line. Three plays later, Welsh quarterback Zach Hayes scored from 2 yards out.

Hayes went on to run for two more first-half touchdowns and threw one touchdown pass to Da’ren Zeno as Welsh went into halftime with a 41-13 lead.

Welsh totaled 379 rushing yards and 175 passing yards. Reggie Jackson Jr. led all players with 208 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Hayes ran for 75 yards and threw for 175 yards, scoring four touchdowns.

“We came out early and a few mistakes early in the ballgame,” said Welsh head coach John Richardson. “We bounced back from that though and did a really good job of getting after them. We played with a lot of intensity. We had to overcome a lot of penalties and things like that, but we came back after halftime, especially the beginning of the second half, and played with a lot of intensity and got after them.

“I’m really proud of the guys. We lost so many guys off last year’s team and to put ourselves in this position to be 9-0. We know what’s ahead of us next week. It’s going to be a tremendous challenge. We’re going to have to have a great week of practice and come out and play great next Thursday.”

Welsh and Kinder are set up to battle Thursday night for the District 4-2A championship. Kinder (8-1, 4-0) defeated Lake Arthur 63-13 to set up this rematch of last year’s semifinals.

“We can’t let the emotions of the game get to us,” added Richardson. “We have a lot of young guys that it’s their first year really playing a lot. It’s going to be a tremendous atmosphere out here next week. They’re going to have to come out here and play solid, especially early in the game come out and play well. Then, as the game gets along, just move into the things we do well. We’re going to have to have a great game next week, and we’re very capable of it. We just have to make sure that early in the game especially we play well.”
