The Barbe Bucs girls basketball team had a breakthrough season last year, going 32-3 and reaching the Class 5A quarterfinals. This year’s team, with four returning starters, is looking to build on that success and faces a good test tonight hosting the Rayne Wolves, who reached the Class 4A title game last season.
Rayne is off to a 5-1 start this season and has already beaten a pair of District 3-5A teams, with wins over Acadiana and Lafayette. The Wolves went 31-3 last season.
“They lost their two studs from last year, but are 5-1,” said Barbe head coach Kelly Durio. “They are going to be athletic and we are going to have to be ready to defend.”
Defending has been a strong suit for the Bucs this season, holding opponents to an average of 32.5 points per game during a 4-0 start to the season.
“I think we have stepped up our intensity as far as getting into passing lanes and trying to get some extra points off transition,” she said. “Offensively, we have run a real balanced attack, we have had different people as our leading scorer each night.”
The Bucs return four starters — Bailey Wilson, Brandi Williams, Ashlyn Poole and Koko Daniels, a McNeese signee.
“We have higher expectations, we were disappointed when we were knocked out of the playoffs,” Durio said “I think, if anything, last year has given us confidence to really believe in what we’re doing and to continue to improve daily. I don’t think they are satisfied at all.”
The Bucs did lose district MVP Aeriyl Mass, who is at UL-Lafayette on a softball scholarship. Durio is taking a committee approach to filling that void.
“We have rotated different players into that spot and changed the offense a little bit,” she said. “It is somebody different every night. Brandi Williams has had a really hot start, Koko has had to defend some post players and Bailey has been our reliable person, so she can score when she needs to and leads by example.”
In boys action, Washington-Marion will also host an Acadiana-area power, with Northside paying a visit. The Vikings are 1-0 this year, with a one-point win over LaGrange. W-M is 3-1, with wins over Bosser, Fair Park and Southern Lab.
