Kinder, Welsh to battle it out for district title

The entire regular season has come down to one game tonight for Kinder and Welsh as the two teams will battle it out for the District 4-2A championship, and premiere seed in the Class 2A playoffs and, perhaps most importantly, bragging rights.

For the fifth consecutive season, the game between the two district rivals will have title implications for District 4-2A, with the winner earning the championship.

“Any time you play in a game like this it’s exciting,” said Kinder head coach Bret Fuselier. “It’s time for kickoff again. At that time, everything that’s been said has been said and everything that’s been written will have been written. We’re excited to play in a game like this.”

The Yellow Jackets have won their last four meetings with the Greyhounds, including a 20-14 win in last year’s Class 2A semifinals.

But three of those four games have been played on Kinder’s home turf, and tonight the Greyhounds will have home field advantage just like they did in 2012 the last time they defeated Kinder.

“We’re certainly happy that it’s at our place,” said Welsh head coach John Richardson. “The bottom line is every year its a different group of kids. We’re just going to have to go out there and play probably our best game of the season. They’re a really good football team and they have 15 starters back from their state championship team and they have a lot of size.

“I don’t think we’ve played our best game yet this year, and I think we have to go out there and play it tomorrow.”

Both of these teams have had little trouble running through the other opponents in the district.

Kinder has defeated all four other District 4-2A teams by at least 50 points, while the Greyhounds have defeated them by an average margin of 40.5 points per game.

The Yellow Jackets are led by running back Taylor Johnson, who has garnered 1,015 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns on the ground on 151 carries this season.

Meanwhile, Welsh’s offense will be headed by quarterback Zach Hayes, a threat on the ground and through the air that has completed 84 of 144 passes for 1,134 yards 14 touchdowns through the air this season.

Richardson said a win would mean a lot more than simply a district championship.

It would be the realization that the Greyhounds have realized the goals he set for the program when he took the helm four years ago.

“It’s kind of that step that we haven’t taken as a program yet,” Richardson said. “We’ve won 21 consecutive games against teams other than Kinder. ... It’s a big step for us, and it’s that game that when we win it, we’ll know we’re where we need to be. It’s huge for us, and we’re going to give it 110 percent and see where we’re at.”
