The Bucs dominated from start to finish in a 57-17 thrashing of Rayne in a girls basketball game Tuesday night at Barbe High School.
The Bucs (5-0) showed little sign of weakness at either end of the floor as they controlled the pace against last year’s Class 4A runner-up Wolves (5-2).
“I think it’s a great win for us,” said Barbe head coach Kelly Durio. “Rayne was 5-1 coming in, and it’s a confidence booster, especially at this time of year during tournament time. Every win is important, especially for the power rating, so we’re really excited about it.”
Barbe scored the game’s first six points, but Rayne came back with a 6-2 run that cut the Bucs’ lead to two points.
That was the last run the Wolves would make, however, as Barbe shut them down the rest of the way, outscoring them 49-11.
Despite the dominant performance, Durio said she saw a lot of holes that need to be fixed in Barbe’s game before the Bucs are prepared to make a deep postseason run.
“I thought we played OK,” Durio said. “Execution-wise offensively, we still have a lot of work to do, and there are times on defense when we’re losing sight of our man. So we definitely need to improve, but I was really excited with our energy and effort tonight.”
Still, Durio said she was happy with the way Barbe utilized ball movement to get clean looks at the basket.
“We’re still working with a different lineup from last year, and we’re still learning how to move the ball better,” Durio said. “But there were great moments of ball movement, and if we can continue to get better at that, it’s just going to help us down the road.”
The Bucs were led by Ashlyn Poole, who tallied a game-high 13 points with a pair of 3-pointers and Divine Tanks added 11 points in the post.
Koko Daniels had eight points, while she and Tanks played a vital role in Barbe’s success with their size and rebounding ability.
“We definitely had the advantage on the boards, and that definitely helped us get going,” Durio said. “I think Divine and Koko did a great job getting the boards, securing them and getting us some second-chance points. That’s what we need.”
Rayne was led by Tiesha Young with five points.
Barbe will host Hamilton Christian tonight in the first round of their tournament, which runs through Saturday.
