LSU reportedly secures Aranda as defensiver coordinator

Ed Orgeron wasted little time in taking care of Job One in his tenure as LSU’s head football coach.

Multiple reports Monday said that Orgeron had locked up superstar defensive coordinator Dave Aranda to remain on his staff.

Aranda reportedly has agreed to a new three-year contract that includes a raise and the new title of associate head coach.

He joined the staff last January when hired by then-coach Les Miles at a salary of $1.2 million per year.

Keeping the 40-year-old Aranda was considered a key priority for Orgeron, particularly since Aranda was a college teammate of new Texas coach Tom Herman at Texas Lutheran.

The deal to keep Aranda was reportedly hammered out Saturday morning even before Orgeron was officially announced as the head coach.

“We understand he’s one of the top guys in the country,” Orgeron said Saturday while expressing confidence Aranda would stay on. “People are going to come after him.

“He is the best coordinator in football. We plan on him being with us ... We’re happy that Dave is an LSU Tiger, I promise you that.”

Before Texas A&M scored five touchdowns on Thanksgiving night while never really threatening the Tigers’ 54-39 victory, Aranda’s LSU defense allowed just 11 touchdowns in the previous 10 games.

It was the second staff news in two days for Orgeron.

On Sunday, LSU confirmed that special teams coach Bradley Dale Peveto would no longer be part of the coaching staff, effective immediately.

“We appreciate Bradley Dale and the work he put into this program,” Orgeron said in a statement. “However, at this time we have decided to move in a different direction with our special teams.”

Speculation for LSU’s new offensive coordinator continues to center around Alabama’s Lane Kiffin, although there isn’t likely to be any movement soon with Kiffin involved with the Crimson Tide’s postseason run.

Orgeron said Saturday that he will hire a top offensive coordinator while Steven Ensminger, who took over the role when Cam Cameron was fired along with Miles in late September, will remain on the staff in some capacity.
