McNeese State will have its point guard Tuesday.
Jamaya Burr, who was issued a Flagrant 2 foul and immediately ejected in Saturday’s 80-78 win against LSU-Alexandria, will not face a suspension against Texas State. He traveled with the team and is cleared to play, spokesman Matthew Bonnette confirmed Monday.
Generals forward Gilbert Talbot and Cowboys post player AJ Brown got into a brief scuffle after going to the floor and contesting a rebound. After officials restored order, Burr ran in and shoved Talbot, nearly restarting the fracas.
Burr was assessed the Flagrant 2 foul, which carries an automatic ejection. It would have carried a suspension if officials deemed the action “fighting,” but that was not the case.
Playing the final 11 minutes without Burr and already missing forward Stephen Ugochukwu with a hamstring injury, the Cowboys hodge podged a lineup together that combated LSU-A’s press and sealed the team’s second win of the season.
“(Jarren) Greenwood had to step up from his position, Kalob (Ledoux) had to play a different role. James (Harvey) had to extend himself not only from the offensive end, but also had to rebound,” Cowboys coach Dave Simmons said. “It seemed like they gelled and I think Jarren did a heck of a job. If you could tell me we beat a team without Stephen and Jamaya Burr on the floor, it tells me guys are buying in and tuning into what they have to do to win basketball games.”
Ugochukwu a game time decision
Though he returned to practice on a limited basis Sunday, Cowboys forward Stephen Ugochukwu remains a game-day decision for Tuesday’s game in San Marcos.
Ugochukwu, the team’s leading rebounder and consistent post player across its first four games, pulled his hamstring in the first three minutes of the team’s 104-65 loss at Memphis, sidelining him for the remainder of that game and the following game against LSU-Alexandria.
“Obviously we’re glad to see him back, he can move a little bit,” Simmons said. “Obviously you need to weigh if we can go play and defend without using him and play well, some other guys can step up and start doing some things. You don’t want him to regress, that’s the biggest thing, because we have some big ballgames coming up.”
Should Ugochukwu not be available, Lance Potier and A.J. Brown would team to fill his gap.
Familiar face
Dave Simmons is no stranger to Texas State coach Danny Kasper’s scheme.
Kasper, the former coach at Stephen F. Austin and a Southland Conference veteran, enjoys a man-to-man defensive scheme and controlling the pace. He’ll face a McNeese bunch seeking its first road win of the season.
“(Kasper) dictates the tempo and how the game flows,” Simmons said. “His plan is, if they get up, he’s going to go to a 2-3 zone. He’s done that for years. It’s going to be a game that obviously we need to go in and win a basketball game on the road. We’ve played a tough schedule so far, but this is the one game probably — it’s not Purdue, it’s not Memphis — but it gives an opportunity for us to match up better with them.”
