A few big names have departed, but a few familiar ones remain among area Class B and C basketball teams, whose season begins tonight.
The Lacassine girls will be looking to return to the top of Class B after losing to Holden in the semifinals of last year’s state tournament.
This year, the Cardinals will be without Mady Brasseaux, Class B Most Outstanding Player each of the past two years, who is currently a freshman at McNeese. The Cardinals’ cupboard is far from empty, with a pair of second team all state seniors, Lindsey Priola and Haley Cooley, in the back court. Last year, Priola scored 16.2 points per game and Cooley averaged 13.7.
Among the contenders in Class B will be Fairview, which lost in the quarterfinals last year but will return two all state players in Maddisen Martin (24 ppg last year) and Callie Maddox, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury. Anacoco reached the semifinals last year and returns first team all state selection Whiney Goins, who scored 15 ppg last year.
On the boys side, two-time defending champion Anacoco loses two-time state Most Outstanding Player Will Reese, but returns second team all state guard Brent Casio (18 ppg). Fairview, a quarterfinalist last year, must replace all state forward Brennan Maddox (29 ppg).
Elizabeth will be looking to make a third straight Class C state tournament appearance. The Bulldogs must replace forward Kolby Friday, last season’s leading scorer at 20 ppg, but return a trio of starters in Tanner Paul, Trey Maddox and Tyler LaFauci, each of whom averaged at least nine points per game last season.
