Spartans 'outwork, outplay' Barbe

East Ascension’s youngster rose to the challenge of a road playoff game, upsetting Barbe in four sets in the first round Division I playoff match.

The No. 22 Spartans (17-24) rebounded from a poor opening set to win the last three, taking the match 18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-20.

The Spartans minimized their errors over the final three sets while the No. 11 Bucs (23-14) uncharacteristically committed them in bunches. East Ascension advances to face No. 6 Fontainebleau in the second round. The winner of that match earns a trip to the state championship tournament.

Barbe had reached the tournament each of the past four years, including a trip to the semifinals each of the past two years.

Sophomore Diamond Jones led East Ascension with 15 kills, including the last point of the match. Junior Brylee Brown added 13 kills, all coming in the final three sets.

“We came back (from the first set) and served better, and made fewer errors,” said East Ascension head coach Jamie Gilmore.

“The first set, we made a lot of aggressive mistakes. We made less in sets two, three and four, which in turn helped us out. The kids played well, they played as a team and everyone came ready to play. This is a young team, we have been working hard on the mental aspect of the game. It just so happened tonight they were able to shake off every mistake and come back ready to play the next ball.”

Koko Daniels had 10 kills and two aces to lead Barbe.

“The first set we played great, we went for everything, we hustled after balls, we played well,” said Barbe head coach Katie Franks. “The second, third and fourth, we still played hard, but we slacked up a little bit. East Ascension outworked us and outplayed us. They got every ball up and fought.”

Franks said her team suffered from concentration lapses.

“They were playing well and we were losing focus,” she said. “We had nine serving errors. That is no good. All that takes is focus. We would win two points, about to go on a run, then have a bad serve. You can’t do that.”

Kylie Bergeron and Abby Ballard added three kills each for Barbe.
