Which small school do you think needs a win most in the final week of the season?
WA: Welsh. In last year’s semifinal loss to Kinder, the Greyhounds showed that they can hang with a championship-level team in a high-stakes game. Beating the Yellow Jackets this time would provide another confidence boost heading into the playoffs.
TN: South Cameron. Currently sitting at No. 24 in the Class 1A power rating, I don’t think the Tarpons are at risk of losing a playoff spot. But a loss to a struggling Hamilton Christian squad could lower South Cameron’s stock significantly. If the Tarpons want to maximize their chances at a run in the Class 1A playoffs, a win against the Warriors is almost necessary.
RA: Vinton. The 2016 season started with great promise for the Lions after they started 3-0, but they have since lost six straight. While they are not in danger of missing the playoffs at No. 24 in the power rating, a win at home this week over Mamou will give them a much needed boost heading into the playoffs.
Which small school player do you believe will have the biggest impact in week 10?
WA: I’m sticking with Keshawn Lyons, the Elton do-everything QB. He is doing it all. He has scored running, passing, receiving and on a kick return in district play. He has over 300 yards of offense in each of the past two games and has accounted for nine touchdowns in the past two games.
TN: Welsh quarterback Zach Hayes has played a huge role in Welsh’s dominance this season, but the stakes have never been higher for the quarterback and the Greyhounds when they take on defending Class 2A champion Kinder for the District 4-2A championship Thursday night. Hayes has completed almost 59 percent of his passes for 1,203 yards and 14 touchdowns while giving up just four picks this season. He will have to have a similar performance if Welsh wants to take down Kinder for the first time since 2012.
RA: Oberlin quarterback James Kirklin has been the key behind the Tigers’ seven-game win streak. Kirklin should have another big game against Grand Lake this week as the Tigers look to close out an undefeated run through District 4-1A. He has rushed for 722 yards and 11 touchdowns in four games.
Which area volleyball team do you think has the best shot to make a run in the postseason?
WA: Barbe has the experience from last year’s run to the Division I semifinals as well as a dominant player in hitter/blocker Koko Daniels. They would have to win a road game to make it back to New Orleans, but the Bucs have done well against Division I teams with an 11-3 record.
TN: St. Louis used to be a staple at the Pontchartrain Center, making at least the state semifinals five consecutive seasons from 2009 to 2013. After back-to-back eliminations in the second round of the Division III playoffs, the Saints seem to be on the upswing under first-year head coach Elizabeth Thompson. St. Louis struggled early in the season, but found itself late going undefeated in district and earning the No. 10 seed in the playoffs. Look for the Saints to surprise some people with several capable and experienced seniors who have led this team to success late in the season.
RA: When the 2016 season started, Sam Houston had less than a dozen players on the varsity lineup and no experienced setters. But the team rallied around the leadership of seniors Darby Bertrand, Stephanie Davis, Madison Fontenot and started the season 7-1. Sam Houston now enters the Division II playoffs with a 28-15 record and No. 7 ranking that has earned them a bye in the first round.
