Three Point Stance: Titles up for grabs this week

What is the best large-schools game on the Week 10 schedule?

WA: Jennings at Iowa, the only game where the winner takes all as far as district titles go, and the game with the most power points on the line for playoff seeding.

RA: Leesville at DeRidder: This year’s battle for the Hooper Trophy will have a big affect on the Leesville Wampus Cats’ postseason fortunes. A win would give the Wampus Cats a share of the District 3-4A championship and possibly move them up enough in the power ratings to get a home game in the first round. While DeRidder is out of the playoffs, they can play the part of spoiler. The Dragons have won four of the last five meetings.

TN: LaGrange at Washington-Marion: A city rivalry game in which LaGrange tries to hold on for at least a split of the District 3-4A championship. The Chargin’ Indians have looked much-improved over the last three weeks, and they are also looking to make its case for a spot in the Class 4A playoffs. They may just earn that with a win.

Which team most needs a win in Week 10?

WA: Washington-Marion, currently at No. 30 in the Class 4A power ratings, needs to win to be sure of reaching the postseason.

RA: For all the struggles this season the Westlake Rams have had to endure, there may still be some light at the end of the tunnel. Westlake is ranked 36th in Class 3A and with a win over St. Louis Thursday and a little bit of help they will be able to sneak into the playoffs.

TN: Iowa. Despite going 8-1 and shutting out its last two opponents, including South Beauregard, the Yellow Jackets sit at No. 7 in the Class 3A power ratings right now. A win against Jennings, at No. 2 in the power ratings, should rectify that and put them in a more appropriate seed one the playoff brackets are announced.

Which player will you be watching in Week 10?

WA: I will cheat and take a unit, the Jennings secondary. The Bulldogs DBs were impressive against St. Louis a couple of weeks ago and now face one of the state’s top group of receivers in Iowa’s corps of Andre Sam, Cole Fleming and Marka’il Nixon.

RA: Sulphur QB Byron Walker has thrown for 200 yards in his last two starts. He will need to keep running the offense efficiently and spreading the ball around to keep the Tors from avoiding an upset this week to Sam Houston.

TN: Jennings running back Travis Etienne. Even while fighting a groin injury, the senior star has continued to put up impressive numbers. Now he and the Bulldogs go into the biggest game of their season so far, and I have to think he’s going to try to put on a show for the playoff-like crowd in Iowa on Friday night.
