The DeRidder City Council approved an emergency ordinance Tuesday night that will begin the process of updating the city’s water meter system.
According to the ordinance itself, the council declared it an emergency due to “the need to replace problematic portions of the city’s metrology infrastructure as soon as possible.”
Public works director Todd Sherman stated that Phase I of the process will consist of training personnel to understand and operate the new system, with an expected initial installation of 500 meters to begin this spring.
In September, several residents complained to Sherman and City Council members that their water bills had increased, in some cases even doubling, for unknown reasons.
Subsequent investigations into the claims found that some were the product of leaks, both on the side of the resident and on the city’s end. While Sherman stated that the process of seeking new water meters had begun before any complaints were received, the new meters will have the ability to monitor usage and provide alerts to possible leaks in the future.
“These new meters will provide us with a wealth of information that will allow us to provide a better service to our constituents,” Sherman stated.
