Some of the state’s best girls basketball teams will congregate and play under one roof this weekend for the Lakeside Bank Ladies Winter Classic hosted by St. Louis Catholic High School.
The action gets started tonight and will continue through Saturday, as nine teams from Southwest Louisiana and abroad will vie in a round-robin style tournament.
“We’re very excited about the tournament because we have some top-quality teams coming to play,” said St. Louis head coach Tony Johnson. “We’re trying to make this thing one of the best girls basketball tournaments in Southwest Louisiana.”
LaGrange and St. Mary’s Academy will kick things off tonight with a game at 5 p.m., followed immediately by a contest pitting St. Louis against undefeated Barbe at 6:30 p.m.
Johnson said he looks forward to playing the Bucs, who have emerged as one of the area’s best teams as of late and currently remain undefeated having won their first five games this season.
“Barbe is undefeated and they’ve got a very, very good ball club,” Johnson said. “They have a lot of speed, and they shoot the ball well from the perimeter and they rebound well. We just have to fight, block out and make sure we’re doing the right things on the rotation on defense.”
The tournament won’t get much easier for the Saints as it continues. They will host Lake Charles College Prep in Friday’s first game at 3:30 p.m. before a Saturday double header in which they will take on Academy of Our Lady at noon and St. Mary’s Academy at 6 p.m. in the tournament’s finale.
Johnson said he put St. Louis against the best teams in the tournament on purpose to see where his team is and to prepare them for later in the season.
“Before the playoffs, for years we’ve wanted to play the best people,” Johnson said. “We haven’t changed the schedule at St. Louis in a long time, and we try to play everybody we can from every class. That makes you better in district, and that makes you better for the playoffs.”
Barbe will play North Central at 5 p.m. Friday and Houma Christian on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Other local teams in the tournament include LaGrange, who will return Saturday for games against North Central and Academy of our Lady, and Washington-Marion, who will play Houma Christian on Friday and Lake Charles College Prep on Saturday.
