Jeff Davis approves plans for new Roanoke fire station

Plans for a new fire station for the Roanoke area were approved Wednesday by the Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury. Fire District 1 plans to buy three lots on West First Street in Roanoke to build a station next year.

The property will cost about $15,000, contingent on appraisal.

Fire District 1 Board President Junior Morvant said Thursday that a new station is needed to ease overcrowding and improve the district’s Class 7 fire rating.

“With the place we are at now we are not able to house all our trucks inside according to the rules and regulations of the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana,” Morvant said.

The district is unable to get the proper credit to improve its fire rating because the equipment isn’t to be stored inside, he said. “A new station is much needed to improve our fire rating,” he said.

The current two-bay fire station on La. 395 was built in the 1950s, with an extension added in the 1990s. “But we are landlocked where we are at now, so we can’t extend the building out,” he said.

The new property will be about a block one from the current station. Plans for the new station will include three bays to house the district’s ladder truck, two pumpers and a service truck. In addition, it will provide office space, something the district hasn’t had before, Morvant said.

He said plans for the new station have been in the works for about six years. “It’s just taken that long to accumulate enough funds and finalize all the plans,” he said.

The project will be funded by tax revenues generated in the district, whose boundaries extend from Farm Supply Road on the east to Hoke Road on the west, Bryan Road to the north and La. 1126 to the south.

It serves about 800 residences and is maintained by volunteer firefighters.
