Lake Charles city officials welcome new Fort Polk commander

The Calcasieu Parish chamber of commerce, in conjunction with the city of Lake Charles, welcomed new Fort Polk commander Brig. Gen. Gary M. Brito to the area with a tour of the city Friday.

The tour helped to showcase the many efforts between the chamber and city to continue building its relationship with the Vernon Parish installation, and Mayor Randy Roach said he was pleased to see Brito had taken up the offer to pay a visit.

“During our Veterans Day ceremony, I gave Gen. Brito a key to the city,” he said. “I am happy to see that he is using that key now.”

One of the city’s largest contributions to its recreational relationship with Fort Polk has been its participation in the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program, which offers single soldiers the chance to assist in community projects and participate in local events.

“Our BOSS program at Fort Polk is one of the top programs in the nation,” Brito said. “For our small installation, that says a lot about the community support that helps make it possible.”

One of the original founders of Fort Polk Progress, Avon Knowlton, also took part in the tour, and she said that such events help strengthen the post’s roots within the state.

“This is a great opportunity not just for Lake Charles, but for the Fort Polk community as well, to help it be seen for much more than just a military base,” she said.

According to Knowlton, Fort Polk accounts for over $1.5 billion in economic impact each year and is the largest employer in the area.
