LSU opens SEC schedule at home

LSU will open Southeastern Conference basketball play when the Tigers host Vanderbilt at 8 p.m. today at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

After an up-and-down nonconference schedule, the Tigers (8-3) will look to bounce back from a 34-point loss to Wake Forest by starting their Southeastern Conference schedule with their ninth consecutive win in the PMAC.

“We’re looking forward to what we like to call our second season with getting into conference play here on Thursday against Vanderbilt,” LSU head coach Johnny Jones said in a news release. “We’re excited about the opportunity to start conference play at home unlike on the road a year ago at Vanderbilt.”

Jones said the Tigers will have to do a good job defending the perimeter, as the Commodores (6-6) feature one of the better 3-point shooting teams in the nation at 39.1 percent.

“That’s an area where we have to continue to improve,” Jones said. “One thing we do know is that they have known shooters that we have to make sure we do a great job of doing a scouting report on.”

LSU went 8-1 in conference home games last season.

Jones said starting the SEC schedule on home court could help the Tigers build momentum as they get deeper into conference play.

“I think it gives your team an opportunity to play with a great deal of confidence,” Jones said. “The road is always going to be a battle so you want to certainly take care of home.”
