McNeese secures verbal commitment to fund new artificial turf inside Cowboy Stadium

McNeese State has secured a verbal commitment from a private donor to fund the replacement of the 9 ½ year old artificial turf inside Cowboy Stadium, athletic director Bruce Hemphill confirmed Friday.

Details and paperwork about its installation are still being finalized, though Hemphill said “I would leave it as a possibility” the work could be finished by the time McNeese is ready for spring practice.

“It depends on the money in place, working around spring practice and the company’s schedule,” Hemphill said Friday. “We have what we want to do and who we want to work with. Now we’ve got a long list of paperwork that has to be solidified, too, through the university as well as the company … We still have a lot of steps to go through before we can get to the point where we can begin destruction and installation.”

The construction and plans must be also approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, which has its final meeting of the calendar year on Dec. 8. Since the verbal financial pledge was secured days ago and other logistics remain, Hemphill said a more apt date for presentation to the board may be in January or February.

In an interview with The American Press last week, Hemphill estimated an installation timeline of less than a month, contingent upon good weather.

“It needs it,” Hemphill said last week. “If you notice, we’ve had slipping and sliding on there even in dry weather. It’s time. The other thing, too, what happens over time is that turf lays down, it doesn’t stand up anymore. And at night you see a glistening on it because the turf is laying down and not standing up anymore.”

Asked if there were an uptick in injuries on the old turf — which was installed in 2008 and replaced natural grass— Hemphill said there was not, but reiterated more slipping and loss of footing was noticeable in the last year.

Hemphill said turf customarily has a lifetime of around eight to ten years.
