Officials still seek leads in slaying: Woman's body was found in Hackberry

The east Texas woman whose badly decomposed body was found December 1 on the side of La. 27 in Hackberry died from blunt force trauma to the head, according to Cameron Parish Sheriff Ron Johnson.

But, said Johnson, there are “no indicators at all” that Christie Lynn Combs, 45, was killed in Cameron Parish. Combs was last seen in Jefferson County, Texas.

“The bottom line is that we have no reason to believe that it happened here,” said Johnson, “We have knocked on camper trailer doors here. We have talked to people here from Jefferson County that may have known her and nothing.”

He said that his department has “chased down everything that we possibly could here” and that they have also conducted interviews in Texas.

“We are going to make one more visit to Jefferson County and that is going to be it,” he said, “We are trying to dig and find any leads or anyone who knows anything.”

Susan Dupont, Cameron Parish Coroner, said that the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Combs but that no determination on how long she had been dead could be made due to her body’s condition. “She was badly decomposed,” said Dupont.

Combs’ family in Orange County, Texas, reported her missing in June. Her body, wrapped in a carpet, was discovered by state highway department workers on the side of La. 27, just south of Hog Island Gully. Johnson said that Combs’ body had been “dropped off” and was on the side of the road for three to four weeks. He said that she was identified by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office through dental records and shared information between Orange police and the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office.

“We are working with Jefferson County officials and have worked with Orange County,” said Johnson, “But there has been nothing that tells us where or when she was killed.”

He said that the last murder in Cameron Parish occurred in 1996.

“Since the early ‘80s, this is the fifth body, I think, that has been dumped off in Cameron Parish,” said Johnson, “And they all came from Texas.”
