LEESVILLE — The Vernon Parish school system is ranked sixth in the state, moving up two spots from last year, according to performance scores recently released by the state Department of Education.
School Board members discussed the new scores Thursday morning with curriculum supervisors Anne Smith and Renita Page, who said the five-point gain reflected great growth in the schools.
“This is the highest ranking we have had with the new testing standards in place,” Smith said.
Smith’s primary focus is within elementary school grades, and she said scores for those grades were up by 3.4 points.
“The criteria for those grades is based solely on test scores, for the LEAP and iLEAP,” she said. “So this is a tremendous amount of growth.”
For the high schools, Page said Vernon Parish’s ACT index is now the highest in the state at 104.9, an increase of 21.5 points from last year.
She said other increases included an 8.8 point graduation rate.
School Board President David Dentz said the scores reflected the great leadership at the schools, and Superintendent James Williams said he hopes to one day see Vernon Parish top the performance standings.
“We are only five-tenths of a point away from being the highest-performing public school in the state,” he said. “We will work on getting that five-tenths, and we will get there one day.”
