Cowgirls work to eliminate winter rust

After a few days of practice, coach Mike Fluty said members of his McNeese State Cowgirls golf team looked “fairly solid.”

“We’re only a couple of weeks from being ready to compete (Feb. 9 in the Ball State Sunshine tournament at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Florida) and I am expecting some positive results,” he said. “We do need to tighten our short game. Our pitching and putting is a little inconsistent, but not too far out.”

He said he would be going with the same lineup for the Ball State tournament that ended the fall season because airline ticket arrangements had to be made early.

That lineup produced a second-place finish and three individual top 10s at the Incarnate Word event in San Antonio last October. Kennedy Bodfield led the way with a fifth place, Kaitlyn Fox was eighth, Ashlynn Novak 10th, Meiyi Pan 17th and Hannah Valentine a tie for 18th.

Fluty said he put his team through an 18-hole round on Monday and noted one positive item coming from it was the play of Riley Issac.

It was the first time she was able to play since the fall of 2015, having undergone back surgery.

Fluty said the freshman and Cowgirls former No. 1 player (she regained a year of eligibility) shot a 2-over-par 74 at the Lake Charles Country Club.

“It was the first time that she was able to play without pain,” Fluty said. “She was a little erratic off the tee but her recovery shots were right on target and her short game was on the money. She just needs to get in a little better physical condition.”

Fluty said the target date for her to return to competition will be the Alabama-Birmingham tournament in Gulf Shores, Alabama, March 17-19.

He said qualifying for the second tournament of the spring — Feb. 27-28 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s event — will begin this week with outings scheduled for Koasati Pines in Kinder and at the Lake Charles Country Club.

“Everyone is excited and ready to go,” he said.
