DERIDDER — Dozens of residents braved water temperatures of 60 degrees Saturday morning to bring in donations for area nonprofit groups during the city’s second Freezin’ for a Reason.
The fundraiser brought in thousands of dollars for local organizations, including BeauCARE, Soul Soup, CASA and Barc, as “plungers” pledged the money they had raised to a nonprofit of their choice before taking a dip into West Park Pool.
The Rev. George C. Glass of Grace Church, a plunger for this year’s event, said that the short burst of cold wasn’t enough to deter him from helping out the worthy organizations.
“It’s all about helping the community,” he said. “I was happy to sign up for a second time if it brings in support for these worthy organizations.”
While total numbers were still being calculated Saturday evening, BeauCARE alone reported bringing in over $1,600. Assistant director Connie Dubose said the funds will be shared among its 18 programs that benefit area youths.
