Not guilty plea in slaying of grandfather

JENNINGS — A Jennings teenager accused of killing his grandfather and another man, whose body was found floating in a canal days later, pled not guilty Monday to charges in connection with both slayings.

Parker Gary, 17, pled not guilty to two counts of manslaughter and one count of burglary of an inhabited dwelling.

A Sept. 18 trial date has been set for Gary.

If convicted of manslaughter, he faces up to 40 years in prison on each count.

Gary is accused of fatally shooting his grandfather, Warren Gary, a former chief investigator for the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office, at his residence on Nov. 15.

Warren Gary’s body was found inside the home by police responding to reports of multiple gunshots fired in the area of U.S. 90 east of Jennings.

Police believe Parker Gary, who lived with his grandfather, shot up his own vehicle, which was parked under the carport to make it look like someone else had shot Warren Gary. Those shots were heard by firemen and reported to police.

Investigators believe robbery was the motive for the shooting.

Gary and Ryan “Pablo” Cole, 17, are also accused in the burglary of Warren Gary’s residence and the slaying of Dedrick Gant, 40, of Jennings.

Cole was arrested shortly after Warren Gary’s slaying on charges of aggravated burglary and illegal possession of stolen firearms after weapons and other items belonging to Warren Gary were found in Cole’s residence. The items, including several guns, jewelry, gold coins and computers, are believed to have been taken from Warren Gary’s residence the weekend prior to his death.

The home had also been vandalized with several mirrors shattered and walls spray painted.

Cole has confessed to his involvement in the burglary, but has denied knowledge of Warren Gary’s murder.

The two were arrested in connection with Gant’s death after his body was found floating in the West Bayou Grand Marais Canal on Nov. 23. Gant’s body was severely decomposed when it was found by a farmer checking on an irrigation pump south of Aaron Road.

Gary is represented by Robert “Bob” Sheffield of Cameron.
