McNeese State’s Cowboys Southland Conference championship, Matt Nicholas and Neithan Allen winning city titles, Ben Suarez earning a top-three finish in his local professional debut and Sulphur High winning the girls high school crown highlighted 2016 area golf events.
The Cowboys claimed their first league title since 1979, winning the SLC crown by seven shots, with senior Martin Eriksson leading the way with a first place 7-under-par 209 total.
Eriksson was named the SLC’s and the Louisiana player of the year while also taking the team’s MVP award, earning berths on the all-Louisiana squad and the College Sports Information Directors of America academic all-American team.
He became the first golfer in McNeese history to be named the school’s athlete of the year.
Cowboys coach Austin Burk added coach of the year honors from the SLC and the Louisiana sports writers to his credentials.
Nicholas claimed both the Lake Charles and the Sulphur city crowns while Allen, who three years before had become the first player to win all three championships, took home the Westlake title.
Westlake also crowned other city champions during the year and they were: Pam Fossett (women’s champion), Bill Stevens (men’s senior), Gerald Quarles (men’s super senior) and Reid Giardina (boys).
Suarez made his home professional debut and placed third in the Adams’ Tour Southwest Louisiana Open at The National in Westlake, grabbing an $8,300 prize. A 7-under-par 65 he had posted on one of his rounds was the tournament’s second-lowest score.
He advanced to the second round of Web.com qualifying.
Led by second-place ties from Brooke Duzan and Brooke Tyree, the Sulphur girls won the Division I state high school girls title by 60 shots. Also in girls play, Lacassine’s Daphrey Tilton tied for 12th in Division II.
Hamilton Christian had the top finish for a boys Division IV team, placing third with top hand Eric Brown placing second. Also for the boys, Barbe’s Zac Ciesla tied for third in Division I, St. Louis was fourth and Jennings’ Seth Cox was fourth in Division II, and Iowa’s Joe Bourque tied for ninth in Division III.
Ciesla enrolled at Webster University (St. Louis) in the fall and won two fall tournaments.

Men’s club champions were: David Culpepper (The National), Craig Trosclair (Gray), John Henry Faulk (Lake Charles Country Club), Gage Primeaux (Mallard Cove) and Thomas Willis (Frasch Park).
Women’s club champions were Vena Cormier (Gray), Tee Labuff (Mallard) and Elodie Pruitt (LCCC).
Also claiming club titles were: Diane Schexnider (Mallard Cove women’s senior), Darlene Wallace (LCCC women’s senior), Doug Quienalty (LCCC men’s senior), Quitman Moon (Gray men’s senior), Bobbie Arnold (Gray women’s senior), Nicholas Guillory and Annie Thomas (Gray juniors).

Greg Sonnier, the assistant pro at the Lake Charles Country Club, was named the PGA Gulf States section assistant/apprentice pro of the year after accumulating 480 points in six playing events. In those six tournaments, Sonnier, who spent a 12 year career on the Web.com and PGA pro circuits, had four top-five finishes, including a first-place tie.
Sonnier was also the captain of a local all-star team that won the Louisiana Golf Association’s club team championship. Team members were Billy Gabbert, Robby Going, Doug Quienalty, Hank Shaheen and Tyler Terry.
Also in LGA events, Bill Stevens and Quienalty tied for the top spot in the senior four ball (plated at LCCC), Blake DeReese and Zak Barton tied for first in the four ball (played at The National), Shaheen placed second in the state amateur, Billy Gabbert tied for 14th in the senior amateur, Eric Brown was 12th and Logan Kuehn 16th in the junior amateur, Matt Nicholas 13th and Robby Going 15th in the mid-am and Bryan McCullough 11th in the net amateur.
In the Louisiana Women’s junior amateur, Brooke Tyree claimed the title.

Also, Gray Plantation won its fourth Lake Area Cup title with a 6.5 point advantage over runner-up Mallard Cove. Leaders for Gray in the event were pro Tyler Kuhn and amateurs George Arnold, Buddy Burks, Brian Bernhardt, Craig Trosclair and Brian Soram.
