Saints capture district crown: Extend winning streak to nine games

The St. Louis Catholic boys soccer team celebrated its senior day with a 3-0 win to clinch the Division III, District 4 title against Teurlings Catholic on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints (18-4-4, 5-0-0) clinched a perfect district season with the victory over the Rebels (9-11-0, 4-1-0) and extended their winning streak to nine.

“I thought it was a gutsy performance,” said Saints head coach Jason Oertling. “We had some key injuries coming into the game. We had to toughen up today, and I felt we did that against a very tough Teurlings team.”

The game served as a district title match as both teams entered without a district loss.

Teurlings attacked early and often but never found a way to put the ball in the net.

The Saints took an early lead in the 12th minute after a corner kick by midfielder Eli Gaughan bounced around for about 15 seconds before Christopher Zareck put it into the net, giving St. Louis a 1-0 lead.

“When you go up against a team of (St. Louis’) caliber, you have to realize your chances to score are going to be few and far between,” said Rebels head coach Jonathan Walsh. “You have to make most of the ones you do get. I feel we didn’t make the most of our chances.

“We had chance to put them on their heels. I thought we were playing well in the first half, but credit to St. Louis. They’re really good at what they do.”

Midfielder T-Beau Faul had a solid senior day outing, scoring the second goal of the game late in the first half and helping the Saints put the game away when he found junior fullback Nic Migues for a header for a 3-0 lead in the closing minutes of the game.

“He did an incredible job,” Oertling said. “He was all over the field, especially in the second half. I know we had a 2-0 lead, but we need to continue attacking. I feel like the first 15 minutes of the half we dominated in large part because he was all over the field finding the ball and distributing.”

The district championship was St. Louis’ second straight and their 13th in 14 seasons.

With playoff brackets to be released Wednesday, Oertling said the perennial state championship contenders are in good shape to make a run at a 12th state championship.

“I think we’re going to be a tough game for anybody that we play,” he said. “Obviously we have a great tradition here, but that tradition doesn’t mean anything going into the playoffs. I feel like these kids have really worked hard, and they’ve done everything I’ve asked them to.

“It’s just going to be a matter of how badly they want it in the playoffs.”
