Creedence Clearwater Revisited drummer Doug “Cosmo” Clifford said fans of the band can expect a high-energy show filled with plenty of hit songs.
The group will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Delta Downs. The band is made up of Clifford, Stu Cook, bass; Kurt Griffey, lead guitar; Steve Gunner, guitar and keyboard; and Dan McGuiness, lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
Clifford and Cook formed Creedence Clearwater Revisited in 1995. The two played in Creedence Clearwater Revival, which included singer-guitarist John Fogerty and rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty. As Creedence Clearwater Revival, they scored several hit songs in the late 1960s and early 1970s. But internal conflicts led to the group disbanding in 1972.
Clifford said the idea to form Creedence Clearwater Revisited in the mid 1990s came from public demand.
“There were people who wanted to hear these songs because either they weren’t born or they saw them played live in the 1960s and wanted to relive that show,” he said.
The group has stayed busy over the last 20 years with its live act. Clifford said the band played 53 shows last year, including a Rock Legends Cruise. They are considering a tour in Australia.
“We’ve got that legacy of wonderful songs,” he said. “That’s what separates us from most bands.”
Clifford said McGuiness is the band’s newest member, joining in January 2016.
“We pick people who know and care about the legacy of what we do,” he said.
Despite playing songs that date back to the 1960s and 1970s, Clifford said each show remains exciting. One of his favorite songs is “Born on the Bayou,” released on the 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival album, “Bayou Country.”
“It’s a grinder,” Clifford said of the song. “I came up with that quarter note beat many years ago. It makes a lot of space between the notes.”
