Dogged effort: Jennings holds on for victory

The Jennings High School boys basketball team edged St. Louis 52-51 in a back-and-forth thriller that went down to the wire Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (15-8, 4-2 District 4-3A) built a 12-point lead and saw it disappear thanks to a second-half St. Louis run, but they were able to hold on and earn the win, thanks in large part to a 20-point game by Travis Etienne.

“We were in an overtime game against South Beauregard, so we’ve been in a bunch of close games and been fortunate enough to win most of them,” said Jennings head coach Logan Maddox. “You don’t want to play close games, but we have a lot of experience in close games, and it’s paid off here late in district play.”

Jennings took control and dictated the pace early using stout defense to limit the Saints (15-7, 4-2) to nine points in the first quarter and effectively running the floor to start the second quarter with a 13-2 run to take a 23-11 lead.

But St. Louis battled back, scoring the next 12 points and tying the score at 23 early in the third quarter.

“That’s the same thing that happened against South Beauregard the other day,” Maddox said. “(St. Louis head coach Rick) LeBato does a great job, obviously. He has tons of experience in big games, and I’m just glad we had a shot to win it at the end, on the road especially.”

From there, both teams found a hot hand, putting together a tennis match of a third quarter that involved a combined five 3-point shots between the two teams.

The Saints had a chance to tie the score with less than 10 seconds remaining, but only the front half of the trip to the line fell, allowing Jennings to hit a pair of free throws itself to extend its lead to three points.

St. Louis missed a 3-pointer in the closing possession before putting it back, but a layup left the Saints a points shy of the Bulldogs.

In addition to Etienne’s 20 points, CorDarrius Ason added 12 points. The Saints were led by Jaleel Goodwin, who tallied 19 points.

A second-half rally allowed the Saints to pull away late.

A 25-point game by Lyric Deshotel wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs as the trio of Alexandria Goodly, Alyx Hardy and Elisia Smith combined to score 44 points.
