Lake Arthur council discusses revising former zoning codes

LAKE ARTHUR — Alderman Bobby Palermo asked the town council Wednesday to look at revising its former zoning codes to help the town grow and prevent problems with future development — especially along the main street area — as people build new homes and sell property.

“The one Lake Arthur had was pretty good at one time, but back in those days it probably seemed too strict and today it would be too lenient,” Palermo said. “I’ve read it front to back, and it’s very simple and easy to follow. It’s kind of residential friendly.”

Town attorney Bennett Lapoint said the town’s zoning provisions were thrown out several years ago by a district judge who thought they were “too vague” and confusing. The action was part of a lawsuit filed against the town, he said.

“We need to revamp it and have maps of the whole town and rezone it, but keep it simple,” Lapoint said.

He said the town has had a lot of changes and additions since the last zoning maps were created. The revised map needs to designate what areas will be included in residential and commercial zones and any variances.

Alderwoman Sherry Crochet said the town needs to look at revising its zoning as soon as possible to help keep businesses on main street.

Mayor Robbie Bertrand said the only real restriction the town now has is an ordinance banning mobile homes on Arthur Avenue from Hawkeye Street to Third Street.
