Only one applicant for JDP superintendent

JENNINGS — Only one person has applied to fill the school superintendent position in Jeff Davis Parish.

Interim Superintendent Kirk Credeur was the only person to submit his name for consideration by the 4:30 p.m. deadline on Monday. The School Board is expected to interview Credeur in the next few weeks and make a decision at its Feb. 16 meeting.

“The School Board has the ability to accept or decline the application,” Credeur said Tuesday. “It’s their prerogative as to what they want to do.”

Credeur, who has 35 years in education — 23 in Jeff Davis Parish and 12 in Calcasieu Parish — said he is excited and humbled to be considered for the position.

“It’s a big and important job,” he said. “A lot of people are going to depend on me.”

Credeur has served as a classroom teacher, principal, assistant principal and supervisor. He served the last 31⁄2 years as assistant superintendent before being appointed interim superintendent in December following Brian Lejeune’s retirement.

“I’ve been here the majority of my career,” Credeur said. “I started my career in this district, and I have worked very close with the majority of the people in the district.

“I have intimate knowledge of the working and knowledge of the system and what it wants,” he said. “I know what motivates our students and staff and their strengths and I want to continue it.”

Credeur said the School Board has a lot of tough decisions to face in the future to ensure the district remains healthy both financially and academically.

“I want to put the district in a good financial and academic shape with everything from the buildings and grounds to the classrooms,” he said.

Credeur began his education career as a special-education teacher at Lacassine High School, where he worked for three years before joining the pupil appraisal service staff in Jennings.

He worked for special-education services in Calcasieu Parish from 1994 to 1997.

He served two years as assistant principal at Prien Lake Elementary School in Lake Charles and was principal at D.S. Perkins Elementary for five years before being named special-education supervisor for Calcasieu Parish.

He returned to Jeff Davis in October 2005 when he was hired as special-education supervisor.
