The 12th-seeded Barbe High School girls soccer team wasted little time running away from No. 21 Airline on Thursday night in a convincing 8-1 victory in the first round of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I playoffs.
The Bucs (18-12-4) needed less than 10 minutes to score three goals and less than 20 minutes to build a 5-0 lead before coasting to the easy victory against the Vikings (9-14-2).
“We got off to a pretty good start,” said Barbe head coach Todd Hoffpauir. “That is the intensity we wanted to bring into our first playoff game, especially at home.”
Julia Papania finished with her second consecutive hat trick, which Hoffpauir takes as a good sign as the Bucs try to progress through the postseason.
“She’s picking a really good time to put the ball in the back of the net,” Hoffpauir said. “She’s putting the ball in the net, and it’s been impressive.”
Abby Bath moved up to No. 2 in Barbe girls soccer history with her 30th and 31st goals of the season. That left her a goal shy of the school record of 32 set by Kelly Sonnier last season.
“Those two played up top together, and they were really close,” Hoffpauir said. “Now (Bath) is going to try to set the record the very next year. That’s pretty cool.”
Barbe also received a strong performance from Chloe Camel, who assisted Jill Bech once and Papania twice on corner kicks for the first three goals.
She also added a goal with a penalty kick after being knocked down inside the box.
“We finally put some corner kicks in right there on the 6,” Hoffpauir said. “We had Juliana Papania and Jill Bech run right through, and they were able to put those balls in the back of the net.”
Barbe moved into the second round where it will take on No. 5 Acadiana, a familiar foe for the Bucs.
The Rams defeated Barbe 3-0 in Lake Charles in their first meeting during District 2-I play.
Hoffpauir said the rematch gives the Bucs an opportunity to get one back on the district opponent.
“We don’t really want to put that loss behind us,” Hoffpauir said. “We want to use it as motivation. We lost 3-0 on our field, and now we have to go to their place. Hopefully we use that as a motivator, and we’re ready to play them next Tuesday or Wednesday.”
