BATON ROUGE — Greg Deichmann hit his fourth home run of the season and LSU pitching combined to strike out 15 Maryland batters as the Tigers completed a weekend sweep with a 9-5 victory over the Terrapins.
LSU (7-1) fell behind 3-0 early, but scored two runs in the second on consecutive RBI doubles by DH Rankin Woley and third baseman Josh Smith.
The Tigers took the lead for good an inning later by taking advantage of two costly Maryland errors to go along with three hits, including Kramer Robertson’s RBI double, for a 5-run outburst.
Deichmann hit a 451-foot home run over the right field wall, which scored Robertson, who reached on a single to lead off the inning, as LSU increased its lead to 9-3 in the fourth for all of LSU’s scoring.
LSU freshman starter Eric Walker settled down after giving up three runs, including two home runs in the first inning, and Caleb Gilbert struck out all six batters he faced in the fifth and sixth innings to get the win, but the Tigers’ bullpen was spotty until closer Hunter Newman came on to get the final out of the eighth and pitched the ninth for his first save.
“I was concerned about the mindset of our game with an early start today and cold weather, and with us having won the first two games of the series,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Of course, they hit two home runs and right away we’re in a 3-0 hole in the top of the first. The way our hitters responded to that I think was very encouraging. We fought back, had a lot of great at-bats, and were able to take the lead.”
Walker threw four innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking two.
“Walker did a good job in getting us through the fourth inning, and Caleb Gilbert threw the ball as well as I’ve ever seen him throw it here. He pitched great and kind of took control of the game.
“Our offense kind of got lax, and we sleepwalked offensively over the last few innings,” Maineri said. “Fortunately, we made some outstanding defensive plays, and Hunter Newman came in and got the last four outs to close out the game.”
