“Humanity is alive and well in Southwest Louisiana,” said United Way of Southwest Louisiana executive committee member Janie Frug? during a luncheon Thursday to celebrate the agency’s campaign success.
Denise Durel, who has served as agency president and CEO for eight years, said the organization exceeded its campaign goal last year by 105.3 percent, raising $4.3 million.
In announcing the accomplishment, Durel said she’s reminded every day of how incredible Southwest Louisiana is when it comes to the work of the United Way.
“We are not only able to address one issue or one problem,” she said. “But we are actually fighting for the health, vocation and financial stability of every person in Southwest Louisiana.”
Board chairman Boyd Boudreaux agreed.
“Our kids are making strides in literacy and career readiness. The hardworking individuals and families in our region our beginning to see a bright light at the end of a dark tunnel of financial hardships,” Boudreaux said.
“The elderly, the handicapped and homebound in our community are gaining access to care and resources that allow for their maximum health and independence. Burdens are being eased, and the people of the region are breathing easier because of programs provided by the United Way of Southwest Louisiana.”
Durel said one of the agency’s latest offerings is the 2-1-1 program, which links people in need with a database of public and community-based resources.
“You can call 2-1-1 from any landline or cellphone to talk to a United Way service specialist who has been professionally trained in the information and referral field and is there to help you navigate you through any situation or problems you may have,” she said.
Durel said residents can use the service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“If you’re hungry, you can’t pay that light bill or you need a place to sleep tonight, and especially when our community is facing a disaster like a hurricane or a flood, you’re asking questions like, ‘Where do I find sandbags? Is there a shelter open? How do apply for FEMA?’ The United Way 2-1-1 specialist will be there,” Durel said.

During the Leaders & Legends meeting, volunteers were recognized for their leadership and dedication to the organization.
Blanche Richard accepted the Harper L. Clark Sr. Spirit of Southwest Louisiana Award. Missy Amidon received the Thomas J. Morris Volunteer of the Year award, and Sarah Ellzey was recognized with the first Leonard Richard Employee Campaign Chair Award. The Corporate Pride was given to LyondellBasell.
