Allen deputy shoots, wounds man who fired at him

KINDER — Authorities say a veteran Allen Parish sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a man who fired at the deputy as he was attempting to arrest the man.

The incident happened mid-morning Thursday as the deputy was responding to a call of suspicious persons around a residence on Langley Camp Road, just west of Kinder, Sheriff Doug Herbert III said.

"As the deputy was identifying and talking to the the suspect, he found he had an outstanding bench warrant for failure to appear," Hebert said. "As the deputy told him to turn around that he was under arrest, the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband and shot at the deputy."

The deputy returned fire shooting the man four times in the lower abdomen, hip area and ankle, Hebert said.

The victim has been identified as Michael Hidalgo, 47, of Kinder.

Hidalgo was airlifted to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria where he was listed in critical condition, Hebert said.

The deputy was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation by State Police, he said.

The suspect will be charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.
