Chefs, potters, vocalists combine efforts for Salvation Army fundraiser

The Salvation Army’s Empty Bowl fundraiser will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at L’Auberge Casino and Resort with entertainment by Paul Groves, an internationally renowned singer and a native of Lake Charles.

Along with colleagues Emily Pulley and Robert Grayson, Graves will present a program of Broadway show tunes, spirituals and popular songs. Rachel Looney, a graduate student at LSU, will also perform.

“I’ll be singing an aria, “Quando me’n vo” which is from a beautiful opera, Puccini’s ‘La Boheme,’ ” Looney said. “It’s a flirty song that Musetta sings to attract her sweetheart.”

Looney will be accompanied by Grayson.

“Mr. Grayson was also my voice teacher at LSU, and I look forward to any chance that I have to either perform with him or take additional lessons with him.”

Looney, a native of Lake Charles, graduated with a bachelor’s in vocal performance in 2015 from LSU and plans to graduate with her master’s in vocal performance in May from Loyola University in New Orleans. She sings with the New Orleans Opera chorus and is also a “Victory Belle” at the World War II Museum in New Orleans.

Groves has performed on the stages of all of the world’s leading opera houses and concert halls.

Groves’ season is filled with debuts and return engagements with symphonies across the United States.

This season he will be singing Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Indianapolis Sympony, Berlioz’s “Requiem” with the San Francisco Symphony under Charles Dutoit, as well as Stravinsky’s “Persephone” with the Oregon Symphony.

The Empty Bowl event will feature 13 soups served by local chefs, and local potters are creating individually handcrafted one-of-a-kind ceramic bowls for each guest to take home.

Individual tickets are $125 and may be obtained by calling the Salvation Army at 433-4155.

All funds raised through the event go to the local Salvation Army to help people with needs in this area.
