JDPJ working to improve Air Evac, 911 Center communication

JENNINGS — The Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury and Air Evac Lifeteam are working to solve the company’s lack of communication with the parish’s 911 Center to renew the service’s operating permit.

Air Evac, which has been operating an air ambulance service in the parish since September, has no direct communication with the 911 Center, said Police Jury President Donald Woods.

“911 can’t talk with them. They are working to get a system and say they have something so that they can communicate,” Woods said.

“It was always difficult when you got a call to know who to send. We need to know which will be the quickest (to respond).”

The Police Jury placed renewal of the ambulance service’s permit on the agenda for its March 8 meeting.

Corey Miller Air Evac Lifeteam operations director, spoke to the Police Jury on Wednesday about the company’s operation, but didn’t address the lack of communication.

“We find, from the people that we talk to in the community, that we have been doing a good job for the citizens of Jeff Davis Parish,” Miller said.

Since Air Evac Lifeteam obtained its permit in 2016, the company has conducted 13 medical flights, Miller said. Most patients have been members of the membership-supported air ambulance service, he said.

Air Evac Lifeteam has just under 200 members, but is expected to grow to 1,200-1,250 members in the next few weeks as it works to increase its business memberships in the parish, Miller said.

“If a patient needs to be flown, it usually means extensive medical or trauma-related injury that will most likely result in a hospital stay,” Miller said.

“When you are a member we accept what the insurance is willing to pay and we write off the remainder. By doing that it basically shows you met your major medical and your hospital stay should be little or no out-of-pocket cost.”

Anyone living in a household is covered by the membership.

Calls to Air Evac Lifeteam should meet the criteria for air transport, Miller said. “If it meets any of those criteria, we should be getting launched,” he said.

There have been several incidents, including two in the last week, in which Air Evac Lifeteam could have been en route to the hospital with a patient before a ground unit ever arrived on the scene, he said.
