McNeese officially announces additions of Ben Norton, Wayne Cordova to football staff

McNeese State made official the hires of Ben Norton and Wayne Cordova on Wednesday, completing Lance Guidry’s second staff after some late-February shuffling.

As first reported by the American Press on Feb. 22, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Eman Naghavi is departing McNeese to join former Cowboys coach Matt Viator’s UL-Monroe staff, paving the way for Norton to return to a place with which he is familiar.

Formerly Northwestern State’s offensive coordinator, Norton coached at McNeese in 2005 and 2006. He will assume all of Naghavi’s duties and also become the run game coordinator.

“When losing a position coach this late, it’s supposed to be hard to fill the position with high quality coaches,” said Guidry. “Well, McNeese is fortunate to have landed Ben who is as good of a hire you can possibly ask for at any time of the year.”

"We needed a run game coordinator to go with an explosive passing game and it was great to be able to land a more than capable coach like Ben Norton."

A Stephen F. Austin graduate, Norton spent time as a graduate assistant at LSU and Vanderbilt before landing his first full-time job at Eastern Illinois in 1997.

Cordova, most recently the defensive coordinator at Isidore Newman, will coach the Buck safeties and serve as Guidry’s director of football operations, a position the head coach created when he announced he was reassuming duties as the team’s defensive coordinator.

A linebacker on McNeese’s 1997 national runner-up team, Cordova — a St. Augustine High School graduate and former head coach there — previously served as director of player personnel at both Tulane and Grambling.

“When we decided to choose Wayne as our Director of Football Operations, it not only brought back another former Cowboy but it also brought back a former player that had played in the 1997 National Championship game,” Guidry said. “I wanted someone who not only would love coaching at McNeese but also had experience at the collegiate level in the player personnel department and be very familiar with operations.

“We also wanted a guy that had a broad knowledge of defensive football and we felt like we hit the trifecta in Wayne.”

Both hires are pending approval from the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors.
