Monster trucks geared for full-throttle LC show

The nation’s most competitive monster trucks will be at the Lake Charles Civic Center Friday and Saturday, March 3-4. The Traxxas Monster Truck Destruction Tour will feature car-crushing giants competing in racing and wheelie contests and demonstrating amazing freestyle action.

“It’s a full-throttle monster truck show,” said Jennifer Davis, the tour’s vice president of marketing.

Davis said the show has been coming to the Lake Charles area for over 20 years — sometimes under other tour names — and that it has been the fans who keep the trucks coming back.

“It is one of our favorite shows during the year,” she said.

This event’s lineup is expected to feature Bigfoot, the truck that started it all, as well as Skully, X-Maxx, Heavy Hitter and Basher. Event-goers will also get to watch Mud Bogs — 4-by-4s and trucks competing in the bog, or mud pit, without getting stuck.

“It’s high-flying, mud-slinging excitement for the whole family,” Davis said.

The crowd will also be entertained by Team Kid KJ, the world’s youngest group of professional mini-monster truck drivers. They will provide event-goers with non-stop action while doing wheelies, rolling and flying through the air. It will be the group’s first time performing in Lake Charles.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. each day for the event, with show to begin at 7:30 p.m.

A Pit Party will be 6-7 p.m. each day. Fans can meet the drivers and take photos with the monster trucks.

They can also ride in a truck during this time, as well as during intermission. Pit Party passes can be purchased on the event days for $10 and must accompany a ticket to the main event.

Davis said free Pit Party passes will be handed out, while supplies last, at Chick-fil-A, 3435 Nelson Road, beginning at 10 a.m. today. She said fans can also come out and see one of the top national Traxxas monster trucks there as well.

Advance ticket prices for the Friday and Saturday shows start at $19 for adults and $6 for kids 2 to 12 years old and are subject to applicable fees and taxes.

Those tickets can be purchased at the Civic Center ticket office, Ticketmaster.com, any Ticketmaster outlet, or by calling 800-745-3000 or 491-1256.

Children under 2 years old will be admitted free.

On show days, Davis said that general admission tickets can be purchased at the Civic Center ticket office at $28.50 for adults and $15.50 for kids ages 2-12.

The Lake Charles Civic Center is at 900 Lakeshore Drive.
