A new trial date for the man accused of fatally shooting a state trooper in 2015 will not be set until after a May hearing.
Kevin Daigle, 55, charged with the August 2015 murder of Steven Vincent, 44, near Bell City, was originally set to go on trial March 13 in state district court with jurors brought in from Bossier City. But on Feb. 7, Judge Guy Bradberry granted a defense motion for a continuance due to the cancer diagnosis of attorney David Price of the Baton Rouge Capital Conflict Office, who sat as first chair for the defense. Bradberry did not set at new trial date at that time.
At a status hearing on Thursday, Price told the court that he had begun chemotherapy and that the treatments should continue until the end of June. Price said that he hoped to “continue to work at this pace” on the Daigle case but that he wasn’t sure what would happen.
Prosecutor Rick Bryant stated his understanding that it was “very likely” another attorney from Price’s office will be coming aboard the case and that the issue should be cleared up by the May 10 hearing on the Jackson evidence — prior bad acts or criminal behavior of a violent nature introduced at the penalty phase of a capital case.
Bradberry informed the attorneys that the May hearing should last two days due to the long list of witnesses and that a new trial date will be set at that time.
