VINTON — Two people were detained Wednesday night in connection with a fatal shooting earlier in the day at a residence in the 1700 block of La. 109 South in Vinton, said Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso.
Authorities received a call about the shooting at about 5 p.m., Mancuso said. A man, identified Thursday morning as Michael G. Fountain, was found dead outside the residence, and a woman and a man were detained for questioning, he said.
Spokeswoman Kim Myers said Thursday that the initial investigation revealed Frin W. Coward, 70, 1751 La. 109 South, Vinton, and Fountain, who were acquaintances, were involved in a verbal argument at which time Coward fired several shots, striking and killing Fountain. When detectives spoke with Coward he confirmed he shot Fountain.
James Planchard, an employee of T&H Car Care across the street from the crime scene, said he was working outside when he saw a woman run across the yard “hollering and screaming.” He said he heard three consecutive gunshots.
“She made it across the yard and started running down the street until I couldn’t see her anymore,” Planchard said.
Myers said Thursday the woman is an acquaintance of both Fountain and Coward but is not believed to be involved in the shooting.
She said the woman flagged down a motorist who drove her to a local convenience store for safety.
Mancuso said the case is the first homicide of the year for the Sheriff’s Office.
