Work has begun on a new access road and canopy for student drop-off and pickup at Prien Lake Elementary School on Nelson Road, a project that was announced in December when Lake Charles LNG made a donation to the school that was matched by the Calcasieu Parish School Board.
The road will be paved and will be partly in the area where the school’s track and field are located. There will be a canopy at the drop-off/pickup point next to the school, and the drive will loop back around to Nelson Road.
Zane Long, project manager for Pat Williams Construction, said the road should be completed by the end of August — earlier if there are no significant weather delays.
Although the School Board this month approved an increase of $231,676 for the road, the project still came in under budget with a revised total cost of $650,000, which includes the canopy. The board also voted to accept $50,000 pledged by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury toward the project.
The School Board had earlier allocated $450,000 from its general fund toward the project, and Lake Charles LNG contributed $200,000.
School Superintendent Karl Bruchhaus said he’s pleased with the contractor and impressed with the progress the workers have made.
Several businesses along Nelson Road are anticipating reaping the benefits of smoother traffic flow at peak times of the day.
“I view it as a very positive move toward eliminating some of the traffic woes that we’ve seen in this part of town,” said Kenzie Stevinson, manager of The Greenhouse Salad Co.
“I think that all of the businesses in this plaza, as well as the patrons who visit our businesses, are looking forward to the completion of that new road because it will result in a reduction in traffic in this particular area.”
The manager of Scarborough’s Salon & Day Spa, Amy Collins, said, “Anything that can help to reduce the stress that people feel when it comes to the overwhelming traffic that we see on Nelson is beneficial to all of us.”
Julie Ortego, principal of Prien Lake Elementary, wasn’t available for comment but when the plans for the access road were first announced, Ortego said, “Safety is number one for us, and this access road will help to keep our students safe.”
